Snapshot Review - The Kid (1921)

Weepy melodrama or slapstick comedy? Both, actually, and somehow Chaplin successfully pulls off this oddest of genre combinations. The story is just the way I like it: simple and well-concieved. While it can't hold a candle to later masterpieces like Keaton's The General (1927), Lloyd's Safety Last! (1923), or Chaplin's own City Lights (1931) or The Gold Rush (1925), The Kid is a touching and often hilarious movie.
