Snapshot Review - Intolerance (1916)

D.W. Griffith followed The Birth of a Nation, the biggest blockbuster of its time, with the most expensive flop of its time: Intolerance. The movie is a disorganized, unsuccessful combination of four stories (only two get any screen time, though) that supposedly explore themes of Intolerance. Really, though, it's all about injustice or oprression. In the end, Intolerance fails to intrigue or make a point.

The only redeeming quality of the picture is its spectacle, which is several years ahead of its time. The camera angles and movement are ambitious and stunning, and the action (especially that which takes place in the Babylon story) is massive and memorable.
