Early Snapshot Review! Code 46 (2004)

Code 46 is a love story between a detective and his suspect set in the near future. The movie succeeds (for the most part) in creating a believable world that might exist in 25 years and characters that we care about. The world of Code 46 is fully realized with a strong, implied cultural backstory. The movie is populated with enough plot machinations to maintain a brisk pace for a relationship story. Unfortunately, the ending is brought about by a complete coincidence. Life is populated with consequential coincidences, but when the climax of a movie is a coincidence, I feel cheated. I recommend the movie while conceding that its ending is weak and it missed a lot of opportunities. Is it worth $8 to see it when it releases on August 6th in LA and NY? If you're intrigued by the idea of a futuristic Brief Encounter, yes. Though, as Brief Encounter clones go, Lost in Translation is better.
