Week in Review - July 26, 2004

Talented director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) has been tapped to direct one of the best comic books of all time, Alan Moore's Watchmen. Hopefully this won't turn into another League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Also, Speilberg may produce a Transformers movie.

At the box office this weekend, The Bourne Supremacy reined supreme with $53 million, despite little marketing. Catwoman, with loads of marketing, fell hard and landed on its back with only $17 million. Notable among holdovers is the Notebook, which is turning out to be one of the leggiest films in recent memory, still at #8. Shrek 2 also hung onto its #10 position and will pass The Phantom Menace for the #4 spot of all time domestic grossers next weekend.

Comic-Con is on! Here's the highlights:

The Batman Begins panel was terribly lacking. Let's hope this is because they're too busy making a great film.

Star Wars: Episode III is titled "Revenge of the Sith" - which hints at a darker tone than its predecessors, but just as much corn.

Sin City made a huge splash with 10 minutes of footage from the stylstic comic book adaptation. Look for this one to blow your mind next year.

The Return of the King extended edition DVD will include 50 minutes of additional footage, including tons of new fight and special effects scenes. Drool...

Pixar's The Incredibles is looking, well, incredible.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow looks to divide critics and fans. The scope and style are awesome, the substance is lacking. Apparently, if you want to enjoy the film, you will. If you want a great movie, you might be dissapointed. We'll see.
